Shipboard Wireless Site Selection Techniques

WLAN technologies appear tailor-made for shipboard applications. Wireless technology holds the promise of freeing up manpower, reducing crew size while dramatically improving the way hull, mechanical and electrical systems and subsystems are designed, installed and maintained. This paper presents a process template to assist the information and process control technologist in successfully deploying today’s COTS WLAN systems. The paper focuses on an eight-step process that balances analytical modeling requirements with empirical surveys to qualify below deck noise, signal propagation and realistic connectivity expectations.
